Tell the FPSD School Board: Do Not Cut Existing Library and PE Programs
The Issue
Keep Present Library and PE
The Franklin Pierce School District in Tacoma, Washington has proposed that elementary school Physical Education be eliminated and the library and computer program is to be cut in half.
It is well established that quality physical education is not only essential for a child’s health, but it is also critical for the child’s ability to learn. Compared to less active children, physically active children perform better academically, have better classroom behavior and attendance, have better psychological well-being, make fewer risky choices, and are at decreased risk for a host of chronic conditions, including diabetes and obesity.
What is more at the core of education than reading and the love of books? Mastering the skills of reading provide one of the essential elements for success in school and life in general. Students need access to just right reading level books that appeal to their interests. Our librarians are experts on children’s literature and they know our students reading abilities and interests. But our library program is more than books and developing a love of reading; it connects our underprivileged students to the outside world through technology, and teaches them how to use that technology to expand their world and learning.
Children deserve a well rounded schooling, and that includes both physical education and library. Ask the members of the school board and district administration to maintain our current programs including all of the present staff.
