Petitioning US Department of Agriculture

Tell the Department of Agriculture to Rehire Shirley Sherrod!

Shirley Sherrod was forced to resign from her position as the Georgia director of Rural Development with the US Department of Agriculture because of a deliberate effort by right-wing media to paint her as a racist. She was forced out of this position almost immediately, before it became clear that conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart had spliced and doctored her original remarks (given at an NAACP dinner) until they were hardly recognizable.

In context, Ms. Sherrod shared a powerful story of moving past racism in order to help people of all races and backgrounds. She deserves an apology from the Department of Agriculture, and she should be asked to return to her position immediately.

Letter to
US Department of Agriculture
Shirley Sherrod was forced to resign from the Department of Agriculture this week, after remarks that she made at an NAACP event were deliberately taken out of context in an attempt to smear her character and that of the NAACP. If you watch the video in its entirety, it's clear that rather than making racist remarks, Ms. Sherrod was revealing a personal story to show the importance of moving past racial discrimination to help the farmers in Georgia who has served with distinction.

You should apologize to her and ask her to return to her position.
