Stop the Trucks on 199th St
Stop the Trucks on 199th St
The Issue
In Southern Johnson County Kansas, a stretch of 199th Street between the Intermodal and Highway 169 is being used as a shortcut route for trucks heading to 68 highway or as a way to circumvent the weigh scales on I-35. Current country plans based on CARNP state that trucks should not be using secondary or arterial roads, and instead should be forced to the state and interstate highway system in compliance with state laws. This is creating a very dangerous and potentially expensive situation. 199th is a very narrow 2 lane road with no shoulders and drainage ditches, meaning any diversion from normal flow will cause a dangerous situation as happened August 13, 2022 when a truck lost control heading East bound and forced a vehicle heading west bound to head for the ditch, that car went airborne, took out a fence, and then impaled on a tree. In addition to the danger, this is a very narrow and thin roadway. To make it safer for trucks, it would need to be widened and rebuilt to ensure longevity as well as safety, costing the tax payers of this counting 10's of millions of dollars.
The current BOCC has been ignoring its citizens most directly impacted by this for months, despite the warnings from residents. They have seen the destruction caused by their inaction, yet still ignore it. Allenbrand, who has BNSF and Northpoint donors, is most culpable along with Eilert. They continue to hold closed door meetings and ignore those impacted, presumably to get some of their precious warehouses built before someone dies to ensure they can keep their donors happy.
If we the people cannot use logic or reason to get the BOCC to take CARNP and safety seriously this will cost lives and money both in the form of lawsuits (since the BOCC is not only aware of the risks but they are negligently ignoring), required road improvements, and land they will have to purchase. Obviously we don't need more money spent, but what happens if the next victim is a school bus full of kids?
We are asking the BOCC to act now, make this roadway a No Truck Route (as CARNP states) and ask the Sheriff to enforce the No Truck Route.
