Tell the Associated Press to Stop Printing Lies About Tarek!

Tell the Associated Press to Stop Printing Lies About Tarek!
The Issue
The Associated Press has printed more than eleven articles about Tarek Mehanna's case since his arrest in 2009, and every article uses dangerously inaccurate and misleading information regarding a shopping mall plot that Tarek has never been charged with. The Associated Press has repeatedly failed to print the actual facts of the indictment, which make no mention of a shopping mall plot or assassination plot. Because there are no charges relating to such a plot, the prosecution doesn't have to prove Tarek's guilt. The media printing these claims tarnishes Tarek's character and has a strong influence on the upcoming trial. Many news media sources get their news directly from the Associated Press, so if they publish lies and misinformation, it gets republished quickly. Here is a small sample of the AP’s irresponsible coverage of the case: “Tarek Mehanna…charged with conspiring with two other men in a terror plot to kill two prominent U.S. politicians and carry out a holy war by attacking shoppers in U.S. malls and American troops in Iraq.” (Oct, 2009) “indicted Thursday on new charges in an alleged terror plot to kill two prominent U.S. politicians and shoot people at American shopping malls.”(November 6, 2009) “accused in a terror plot to kill Americans" (July 20, 2010) “accused in a terror plot to shoot shoppers at U.S. malls, assassinate two politicians and kill American troops in Iraq” (March 1, 2011) Continuing to print this misinformation is irresponsible and reckless. Demand that the Associated Press adhere to its own stated principles and values of journalistic integrity by retracting and ceasing to report this misinformation about Tarek Mehanna's case.
