Tell Southern Baptists: Reject the Vote to Overturn Marriage Equality
The Issue
The Southern Baptist Convention is expected to vote this week on a resolution calling for a concerted effort to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges—the landmark Supreme Court ruling that guaranteed same-sex couples the freedom to marry. If passed, the resolution would urge thousands of churches and political allies to work toward ending that right.
This isn’t just symbolic. It’s a direct step toward reigniting the fight to roll back LGBTQ+ rights—and it echoes the same long-term legal strategy used to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Most Americans support marriage equality. Love, commitment, and family are values that transcend religious or political divides. And yet, a small but powerful group within the SBC is pushing a divisive agenda that would harm millions of people, including LGBTQ+ individuals who are members of Southern Baptist families and churches.
We call on the Southern Baptist Convention to reject this dangerous resolution. Do not use your platform to dehumanize LGBTQ+ people, threaten hard-won civil rights, or turn churches into political weapons.
Marriage equality is here to stay—and history will remember who stood for love and dignity, and who stood in the way.
