Tell Senators Collins and Snowe to Support DADT Repeal

Tell Senators Collins and Snowe to Support DADT Repeal

The Issue

Next week, the Senate will decide the fate of the discriminatory policy known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Given Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) promised filibuster, we need at least 60 votes, including the support from no less than two Republicans.

In the past, Republican Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe have stood up to their party, and made tough decisions for the benefit of our nation and their home state of Maine.

Sadly, Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) has called upon his fellow Republican senators to block any and all Democratic legislation that doesn't fit his narrow and unwavering agenda. However, Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) ditched such partisan game-playing, and has vowed to favor the repeal.

If Sen. Brown is willing to end the descrimination against our men and women in uniform, what's holding up Sens. Collins and Snowe?

In the past, both Collins and Snowe have voiced their opposition to DADT, but are still standing in the way for its repeal. It's hard to forget last September, when both of them joined McCain's filibuster against the repeal, citing that they would wait for completion of the Pentagon study before voting on the measure.

Well, the study is in, the military leaders have spoken, and even Maine's veterans have called upon them to act, yet no word from either senator regarding their intention. The closest thing to a response that we have seen, is when Sen. Collins credited the quality of the recently released study, but this is far from a "yea" vote from the senator.
