Rep. Jeff Miller, a Republican from Florida, seeks to sacrifice America's highest principles for perceived safety from terrorists. Miller tucked an amendment deep into the defense appropriations bill that threatens Guantanamo defense attorneys with investigations merely for doing their jobs. Considering the disrespect the amendment shows for the American legal system, the rule of law and one of our nation's Founding Fathers, Miller should be ashamed. 

Miller even attacked the John Adams Project, and enterprise that helps Guantanamo detainee lawyers with legal research. The Project is named after our country's second president who defended eight British soldiers charged with killing American civilians in the Boston Massacre. Adams' dedication to the rule of law and our nation's promise of fairness -- even when it's unpopular -- should be honored, not forgotten or scoffed at my someone eager to sacrifice our highest principles.

Tell Rep. Jeff Miller that America's promise of fairness and justice for all is not on the table for him to barter away for political points. We are a strong country that has survived threats to our freedoms not be sacrificing them, but by preserving them even when the going gets tough. This is no time to surrender the ideals that the Founders fought so hard for, and that our troops continue fighting to protect.
