Tell Patagonia to Drop the Lawsuit Against Environmentalist Drag Queen Pattie Gonia
The Issue
Patagonia says it exists to save the planet. So why is it suing a climate activist who has raised nearly $4 million for environmental nonprofits?
Pattie Gonia is the drag persona of Wyn Wiley, an environmentalist performer who has spent years raising money and awareness for the causes Patagonia claims to champion. Last year alone they hiked 100 miles in full drag from Point Reyes to San Francisco, raising $1 million for nonprofits along the way. They have never used Patagonia's logo, font, or branding. Their name is a drag pun. Drag is built on parody.
In January, Patagonia filed a federal trademark lawsuit against Wiley after they applied to trademark the Pattie Gonia name for clothing and environmental activism. The company says it is only seeking $1 in damages. But the legal fees to fight a corporation with 50 years of resources behind it would cost Wiley far more than that.
Patagonia's founder gave the entire company away to a trust designed to funnel profits into saving the planet. That is a remarkable thing. Suing a queer climate activist for a drag pun on their company name is not consistent with that legacy.
Wiley put it simply: this is not a brand conflict. This is a corporation using its resources to erase an individual activist.
Sign this petition to tell Patagonia's board of directors to drop the lawsuit against Pattie Gonia and stand by the values they claim to represent.
