Tell NYC’s Next Leaders: Protect NYC's Children. Stop the E. 91st Street Dump!

We cannot stop fighting to protect children from the increased asthma, lung disease and traffic accidents that will result from the City’s plan to build a massive garbage facility – marine transfer station (MTS) – at East 91st Street.
The dump not only threatens the health and safety of residents across East Harlem, Yorkville and the Upper East, but also the 31,000 children from across the City who rely on Asphalt Green’s recreational fields and playground.
In a few short months we will have a new mayor, city comptroller, borough president and other leaders who can reverse this terrible decision – if they hear from us now.
Since the plan was voted on nearly ten years ago, new information has emerged.
- The new dump will increase air pollution in the area by 16%.
- Child hospitalization rates from asthma will increase by 8%.
- In June 2012, the World Health Organization reclassified toxic diesel fumes as carcinogenic.
- Truck emissions will exceed new EPA safety standards.
- Garbage trucks have the highest pedestrian killing rate of any vehicle on the road.
As a result, we are launching a new campaign, called Pledge 2 Protect. Our goal is to mobilize concerned citizens to convince our next mayor, borough president, and city comptroller to stop this irresponsible, dangerous garbage dump.
Simply put, garbage facilities belong in commercial and industrial neighborhoods. They should not be located next to homes, schools, parks and playgrounds.
Take the Pledge. Sign the petition. Politicians need our support. First, we want theirs.
