Tell Minnesota: Stop Refusing Welfare Benefits to Mothers Who Have Miscarriages

Tell Minnesota: Stop Refusing Welfare Benefits to Mothers Who Have Miscarriages

The Issue

The Minnesota Senate is considering changing one of the most warped and wrong-headed laws in the nation: denying welfare benefits to mothers who have had miscarriages.

The profoundly stupid law in question says that many parents can only receive benefits for the number of children they had when they first applied for welfare and it counts a miscarriage as a “child.” That means a woman who has a miscarriage and then becomes pregnant again and gives birth could be denied benefits because her child would be considered her “second” by the state.

It is time to end this absurd law.

Sign the petition and tell Minnesota to end the miscarriage loophole and provide fair and basic support for all mothers and children in need.
