Tell Meta, X and TikTok: Remove the Charlie Kirk Assassination Videos Now
The Issue
It should never be this easy to watch someone die.
After the tragic assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, graphic videos of the moment he was killed have continued to circulate across nearly every major social media platform.
Some platforms—like YouTube and Meta—chose to label the video as “sensitive,” while others, including TikTok and X, allowed uncensored versions to spread without warning.
No family should have to watch their loved one’s death shared, edited, and amplified for clicks. And no community should be desensitized to political murder just because an algorithm hasn’t caught up—or because a platform has chosen not to care.
This isn’t about politics. It’s about humanity.
When the Christchurch attack in New Zealand was live-streamed in 2019, global platforms promised to do better—to act quickly, remove violent content, and protect users from trauma. Now, just years later, we’re seeing how fragile those promises were. In the case of Charlie Kirk’s killing, multiple platforms waited hours or even days before applying basic safeguards. Many versions of the video remain online—clickable, shareable, monetizable.
We believe every person—regardless of political affiliation—deserves dignity in life and in death. That includes Charlie Kirk.
We, the undersigned, are calling on:
Mark Zuckerberg (Meta)
Neal Mohan (YouTube)
Shou Zi Chew (TikTok)
Elon Musk (X)
to immediately and permanently remove all versions of the uncensored graphic video depicting Charlie Kirk’s assassination from your platforms.
If your policies ban “extremely violent content,” enforce them. If you claim to value trust and safety, prove it.
We cannot allow another political assassination to be reduced to viral content. It’s time to draw the line.
