Tell Meta: Don't censor groups tracking ICE activity in our cities. Protect communities!
The Issue
Meta has just removed a Facebook group used to track ICE activity in Chicago — following pressure from the Department of Justice and Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The group helped alert community members when immigration enforcement officers were spotted in their neighborhoods.
Meta claims the group violated its policy on “coordinated harm.” But what about the coordinated harm of secretive immigration raids, family separations, and community surveillance?
We, the undersigned, call on Meta Platforms Inc. to:
- Immediately restore the removed ICE-tracking pages that did not incite violence or violate platform rules
- Reject political pressure from the DOJ or Trump administration to silence community reporting
- Affirm that monitoring public law enforcement activity is protected speech under the First Amendment
For many people — especially undocumented immigrants, mixed-status families, and their allies — these pages are a lifeline. They provide real-time alerts that can help prevent wrongful arrests, family separation, and intimidation in schools, hospitals, and public spaces.
If Meta can remove these pages today, what will they silence tomorrow?
People have the right to film ICE in public spaces, report sightings, and warn their neighbors — just like they can track speed traps or protest police checkpoints. Shutting down these digital spaces under vague “coordinated harm” policies endangers vulnerable communities and undermines the public’s right to organize and document abuses of power.
This is not just about immigration. It’s about digital rights, platform accountability, and free speech.
