Tell Memphis: Don't Discriminate Against LGBT Citizens
The Issue
The city of Memphis, Tennessee is gearing up for a City Council vote on an ordinance that will extend anti-discrimination protections to the city's LGBT population. It will add sexual orientation and gender identity to a non-discrimination ordinance, with this specific language: "There should be no discrimination in hiring, promoting or demoting a city employee based on sexual orientation, gender identity or expression."
Many in Memphis see this as a progressive move that the city can take to make it even more inclusive, and to compete with other cities (including Nashville) that have already adopted such ordinances.
But several anti-gay politicians and religious groups are trying to stop the ordinance from becoming law. They're organizing churches to contact City Council, and have city council members turn down the ordinance. We can't let that happen.
Send a message to the Memphis City Council today and urge adoption of this inclusive ordinance. No person should be fired from their job, refused a promotion, or treated unequally in the workplace because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
