Tell Mayor Landrieu to Save Charity Hospital
Tell Mayor Landrieu to rebuild and reopen Charity Hospital now.
This petition is being created to pressure Mayor Landrieu to reopen Charity Hospital in honor of the 100th anniversary of Reverend Avery C. Alexander's birth and the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
New Orleans needs healthcare now!
I understand that our hospital may no longer be fully publicly funded, but it is important to me that it remain in the historic medical district while continuing its mission of excellence in teaching and physical and mental patient care.
The hospital, in its current location, is a solid and iconic structure that dates back to 1939. It, in a large part, defines our culture because of the many local residents, musicians and artists who were born there and who are proud to refer to themselves as Charity Hospital Babies.
The post Katrina amputation of Big Charity from New Orleans has left an open wound that
festers to this day.
Due to decisions made by LSU, state and city officials and real estate developers, not only do we still not have an urban hospital, but hundreds of thousands of displaced residents have not returned for lack of affordable public housing and healthcare.
I SUPPORT THE FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE PLAN BY RMJM HILLIER ARCHITECTS TO RENOVATE AND REOPEN REV. AVERY C. ALEXANDER CHARITY HOSPITAL!
