Tell Lowes: Don't pull ads from "All-American Muslim"

The Issue

Profoundly ignorant and un-American. These are not our American values.

The major home improvement retailer Lowe's just pulled its ads from a popular reality show featuring the everyday lives of Muslim families in Detroit.

The move by Lowe's came as a result of a campaign by a rightwing group based in Florida. The Florida Family Association objected to the Discovery Channel/TLC's "All-American Muslim" calling it "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

In response, California State Senator Ted Lieu called Lowe's decision "bigoted, shameful, and un-American" and "profoundly ignorant." We join State Senator Lieu in calling on Lowe's to reverse its decision.

Tell Lowe's: Reverse your ignorant and un-American decision to pull your advertising from "All-American Muslim."

Lowe's has made public a corporate commitment to diversity and inclusion in the past. The Lowe's website states "The behavior and actions that support diversity and inclusion come from the conviction of every Lowe's employee--making diversity and inclusion a conscious part of how we run our business, serve our customers, represent ourselves in the community, and treat each other."

Just because a rightwing group thinks all Muslims are potential terrorists, doesn't make a television show that portrays the daily life of an American Muslim family "controversial." It makes the group protesting the show bigoted. And it makes Lowe's behavior in caving to their xenophobic rantings not just cowardly but shameful.

Tell Lowe's: Reverse your ignorant and un-American decision to pull your advertising from "All-American Muslim."
