Tell L.A. and West Hollywood to recognize Edward H. Fickett, FAIA and to stop destroying his work.

The Issue

Edward H. Fickett was a "green" architect 60 years before the term was coined. According to the American Intsitute of Architects in Washington D.C., he is "an American Architectural Hero". To save his work, would not only be to preserve his legacy as a father of the "Green" movement, it would also be in keeping with the green philosophy of adaptive reuse. He pioneered the concept of a gentle footprint on the Mid-Century Modern design landscape, but with a mighty force as he is celebrated in building over 60,000 homes along with designing some of the Country's important Master Plans.

He is the only architect to have received an Honorary Award of Merit by a US President.  His spirit and intention was only to serve the community he was apart of and to elevate the lives of the middle class to live like millionaires through his innovative engineering and designs throughout his career which to this day stand out for the eco-friendly merits they achieve.  Edward H. Fickett, FAIA is the MOST important American architect of the Mid-Century Modern movement here in Southern California.

With all of the lives this man's work has effected through his office buildings, Master plans for Military bases and Urban Planning, not to mention the Port of Los Angeles and the unique Mid-Century Modern West Hollywood Park.  The volumes of single family homes built here in Los Angeles as well as Geneva and the French Riviera still have a dramatic impact on the landscape of this genre.

At the end of the day, this Library was never to be torn down within the City's initial offerings.  Even telling the widow of the late architect, Joycie Fickett, "Don't worry about the Library.  It's off the table and you will not have to concern yourself about it."

Where is the respect to this great American hero?  How can a City think that by including 5,000 sf of extra GREEN space to the allready increased acreage the park is receiving important when a significant Historic Landmark is of question.

We urge the City and County to take notice of the events occuring in West Hollywood and evaluate accordingly to stop the demolition of the Fickett Library.  There are too many ways to reuse the building.  The discussion should be brought to the table about what would best serve the community:  Reception Hall, Veteran's Center, Tourist Center, Memorial to Mr. Fickett, etc.  We can be adult about this and figure out a way of retaining the building thus retaining our Cultural Heritage of the once Western Hollywood / City of West Hollywood.

Emanicpation should not mean erradication.  Stop any more thoughts of taking down this pilar to the community of LOS ANGELES and to the Southern California landscape of Mid-Century Modern architecture.
