Congestion charges have been successful in London, Milan, and Stockholm, and are going to be implemented in São Paulo and Beijing. They have been shown to decrease travel times, congestion, and air pollution while increasing bicycling, public transit use, and public health. Congestion charges can also be a source of much-needed revenue for transportation infrastructure and other initiatives. Boston, as a global leader, as a city with the sixth worst traffic in the nation, as a city due to grow its population, needs to learn from the successes of other cities and investigate the feasibility of such a system. Doing so will positively impact the quality of life for Bostonians and due our part to fight global warming.
