Tell Congress to Support Women in Afghanistan

Tell Congress to Support Women in Afghanistan
The Issue
Afghan women are ready to risk everything for education, better human rights and the opportunity to improve their lives.
In Afghanistan - where the life expectancy for women is just 44 years - several women-led organizations are working to improve the situation.
It's essential that Americans push for aid to support these organizations' programs which are so vital to the future of Afghan women.
This week, WILPF joined a coalition of major women's groups and peace organizations calling on Congress to support the Afghan Women Empowerment Act of 2009 (S229/HR2214). This act, introduced in the Senate in 2007 by Sen. Barbara Boxer and into the House this spring by Representatives Carolyn Mahoney, Lynn Woosley and Tammy Baldwin, provides a structure for administering funds to Afghan nonprofits.
Click here to send a letter to your senator or representative, urging them to co-sponsor this important legislation.
It will help ensure that U.S. foreign aid to Afghanistan goes directly to organizations such as the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and other programs working to better the lives of Afghan women and girls.
While WILPF opposes military escalation in Afghanistan, we recognize the responsibility of the United States to engage in constructive efforts to help repair Afghan society.
Women's involvement is critical to successful peace building and Afghan women need resources as well as political access to secure their future. It's up to us to ensure that they get the support they deserve and sorely need.
Thank you!
