The Issue

For many Canadians, especially seniors, people with disabilities, and those living in remote areas, the ability to receive home mail delivery is not just a convenience—it's a necessity. Imagine my elderly neighbour in a wheelchair, struggling to get to a centralized mailbox several blocks away in the dead of winter. Or think about those of us living in rural Canada, in places where accessing central mailboxes means braving long distances, slippery roads, or extreme weather. It's these real-world challenges that make maintaining home mail delivery so crucial.

Despite the essential nature of this service, Canada Post and the federal government have been moving away from the traditional model of home delivery, opting instead for centralized community mailboxes. This shift is touted as a cost-saving measure, but it overlooks the adverse impacts on countless Canadians who rely on regular, accessible mail service.

What can we, as citizens, do to ensure that everyone receives the mail they depend on? We propose a strategic approach that not only retains home delivery but enhances it. Our idea is to extend the delivery service to a daily schedule, thereby matching the service speed of private delivery companies. Additionally, by combining resources with Purolator, a company owned by Canada Post, we could create a financially viable model that upholds this essential public service.

It's not merely about preserving a service; it's about enhancing it to meet the evolving needs of our society. This change would not only keep Canadian citizens connected but also foster a sense of community and care within our neighborhoods.

Supporting home delivery is not just logical—it's responsible. Therefore, we call on Canada Post and the federal government to reconsider their plans, to listen to the voices of the Canadian people who depend on this service, and to act in the best interest of all citizens. Please sign this petition to help us ensure that home mail delivery continues to be a staple of Canadian life, supporting our communities and enhancing our quality of life.
