The Issue
The Lok Sabha elections of India must take bolder, faster climate action than any leader has before. the media is still ignoring the issue, giving cover to politicians who refuse to acknowledge the scale of the crisis.
We need to put climate change center stage. One powerful way to do that is through a primary debate strictly focused on the climate crisis. A climate debate would push the candidates to concretely address how they will tackle one of the biggest challenges of our lifetime.
Tell all Political Parties: Hold a 2019 Lok Sabha elections primary debate focused on climate action!
In the primary season, unless the DNC prioritizes the issue, we know that news networks and other debate host organizations won't ask more than one or two token debate questions on climate change. We have to demand that candidates' get the airtime to present their plans for bold and visionary climate action —because we have a little over 10 years left to cut carbon emissions in half to avoid the worst impacts of climate catastrophe.
Voters deserve to know:
- Which candidates commit to making bold climate action a "Day One" priority when in office.
- Whether Lok Sabha Candidates support the Green New Deal and how they plan to make it a reality — or if they will offer their own plan that also meets the scale of the climate crisis.
- Candidates' plans to put an end to coal, oil, and gas expansion and begin to phase out existing fossil fuel production.
- How candidates would protect communities on the frontlines of climate disasters and fossil fuel pollution, and ensure a just and equitable transition for workers that leaves no one behind.
- Whether candidates believe that fossil fuel companies should be held responsible for the costs of climate change and how they will make sure it happens.
We need climate leaders who are ready to tackle this crisis head-on by fighting for our future — and not the interests of corporate polluters. Ten of thousands of people have already signed onto this petition urging you to organize a climate debate with the 2019 Democratic Prime Ministry candidates. If you truly want progressive change, you must show climate leadership to protect the future.
