Remove and apologise for the horrible article about Conchita Wurst by Brendan O'Neill on the Telegraph website
The Issue
Transphobic and downright intolerant of gender identites that stray from the old fashioned, incorrect and outdated binary, this article is disgusting, completely offensive, and should be removed at once.
The article in question, linked so as not to provide the page with any hits: http://www.donotlink.com/icc
In the following I have used the terms trans and genderqueer to cover all non-binary and non-cis identities.
Trans and genderqueer people suffer some of the worst discrimination and prejudice today. At the best of it, still the butt of many jokes, while at the worst, well. The numbers speak for themselves. One study states "about 40% [of the transgender people surveyed] had experienced verbal abuse, 30% threatening behaviour, 25% physical abuse and 4% sexual abuse. About 25% had been bullied by their teachers."[1] A 2007 survey of 872 trans people found that 34% of respondents had considered suicide.[2] A study in Ireland revealed that nearly 80% of trans people have contemplated suicide, and 44% saying they'd self harmed [3] - these last three statistics are a result of the violence, physical and verbal, that trans folk are unfortunately more likely to receive, simply for being who they are. And that's only on these little islands.
While Conchita Wurst is not transgender, she has stated she "prefers "she" and "her" and is more comfortable as Conchita than Tom the "lazy boy" she dresses down as" and "by her own description, she does not fit, but is "in between", non-binary".[4] This includes her under the genderqueer umbrella, as a non-binary individual.
The article completely disregards Conchita's wishes, referring to her with male pronouns throughout, and totally mocking gender as a spectrum. It's extremely disrespectful to Conchita and trans people as a whole, the article basically screaming 'how dare this person have the audacity identify differently to their genitalia'. The language is aggressive and hostile, literally describing those who define gender as an identity are "unhinged". The tired 'biology' argument is used, showing the author seems to have confused the definitions of sex and gender, yet writes as though he is an expert on the subject of gender psychology.
And no, race and gender are barely comparable. That metaphor has failed, and let's be honest, is kinda racist.
The author writes "there's just a gender spectrum and you can choose where you feel you fit into it", as though this is something to be mocked, but that's exactly what everyone is free to do. Why is the author so offended by the idea of a gender spectrum? Why is he so personally appalled by people being able to present however they wish? How does respecting someone else's wishes by changing a few tiny words in his vocabulary affect him so negatively?
Gender is social. There are males and females and intersex people, but what it means to be a Man and what it means to be a Woman are things that society dictates, and it doesn't matter if Conchita has a great big bushy beard or a face as clean as a whistle - she asked you to call her a she, and that's what you do. Because she's a person who deserves respect, like everyone else.
