We the undersigned express our concern that Xavier College may stop teaching Ancient Greek after 148 years. 

Xavier is the only secondary school in Victoria providing this opportunity.  The ancient Greeks provided firm foundations for philosophy, democracy, mathematics, sport, drama, history and literature.  Their language is the bedrock for understanding these at the source.  The New Testament was written in Greek- it is a key to understanding Christ’s words more fully.  Ancient Greek nourishes almost every educational discipline. 

We deeply appreciate Xavier College and the Jesuits’ support of this great language.  We ask that it continue to be taught and promoted as an outstanding opportunity for Xavier students.
