Maryland Loves Its Teachers: Teachers to be exempt from state and property taxes.
The Issue
Dear Teachers,
We believe that teaching is one of the most important professions in our society. However, we also understand that it is not always the most desirable career choice due to various factors such as low pay and high stress levels. As a means of making teaching more attractive and rewarding, we propose that teachers be exempt from state and property taxes.
According to a report by the National Education Association, the average teacher salary in the United States for the 2019-2020 school year was $63,645. This is significantly lower than other professions requiring similar levels of education and experience. In addition, many teachers spend their own money on classroom supplies and materials due to insufficient funding from their schools or districts.
Exempting teachers from state and property taxes would provide them with much-needed financial relief. It would also serve as an incentive for individuals considering a career in teaching to pursue this path knowing that they will have more disposable income.
Furthermore, this proposal could potentially lead to higher retention rates among current teachers who may be considering leaving the profession due to financial strain or lack of job satisfaction.
We acknowledge that implementing this proposal may require adjustments in state budgets and tax laws. However, we believe that investing in our educators is essential for creating a better future for our children and society as a whole.
Therefore, we urge lawmakers at both state and federal levels to consider implementing tax exemptions for teachers as a means of making teaching more desirable and rewarding.
Sincerely,
Dr. Loida McDuffie
