Teachers are Being Priced Out

The Issue

As educators in Sunnyvale, we serve the needs of a vibrant and thriving community, shaping the minds of future leaders. But the increasing cost of living is rapidly becoming a major obstacle for us to continue teaching. With the median house prices crossing $1.8 million and an average rent of $2,900 for a one-bedroom, teachers with annual salaries ranging between $80,000 to $150,000 are barely surviving, let alone living in the community. This retention crisis adversely affects our students, who experience a lack of continuity in their education due to high turnover rates.

Long commutes add further stress leading to teacher burnouts, undermining our effectiveness in the classroom. Furthermore, our inability to live locally diminishes our opportunities to engage in beneficial after-school programs, tutoring, or contribute significantly to community events. The rising cost of living risks eroding the heart of Sunnyvale, leaving little space for committed, nurturing, and hardworking teachers.

We call upon the local government to implement policies and initiatives to make housing more affordable for teachers. Make Sunnyvale a place where its teachers can afford to live, work, and contribute to the future of its bright young minds. Lend your voice to our cause; sign this petition today.
