Teach Palytoxin Poison Safety in Scuba Certification Courses

The Issue

(Our tournament season has ended. Thank you all for your wonderful support!)

Sometimes people can be hurt by simple corals. They may be unknowing that corals could harm them. We have designed this petition to create our FIRST® LEGO® League innovation project. We extensively researched how some corals release palytoxins. Those are the second most lethal poison in the world. Just one gram could kill eighty people. We talked about PADI or, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors scuba courses. PADI is the largest dive training organization. Scuba Schools International, or SSI, is another excellent organization. The courses do not teach you anything about palytoxins and their mechanics. We know this because two of our team members have been scuba-certified. Over 30 million people have been certified. Some people even have these corals in fish tanks that they could handle without proper safety equipment.

There aren’t many documented cases of palytoxin poisoning. However, this is still a life-threatening toxin, and people dive without knowing about it every day. If we don’t act, there could be hospitalizations or even fatalities on the horizon. If this petition is approved it is possible that you or your friends could be safer from these dangers. The solution could even just be adding a short video to the online section of PADI and SSI.

Some of our families are scuba certified so they need to understand these dangers. When they went diving for the first time they would have never expected such an extreme danger hidden in such an innocent-looking coral. All it would take for one of them to fall victim to the toxins would be an open cut followed by exposure to palytoxins. They were not in contact with the corals, but if they knew what they were, they would have stayed away.
