Teach Emotional Intelligence in Canadian Schools

Teach Emotional Intelligence in Canadian Schools
The Issue
To the Honourable Minister of Education and Provincial Government Officials,
We are calling on the Government of Canada to implement mandatory emotional intelligence (EI) education as a structured part of the public school curriculum.
Emotional intelligence — the ability to understand, manage, and express emotions in healthy ways — is foundational to lifelong success. Research consistently shows that students who receive social-emotional learning demonstrate improved academic performance, stronger relationships, reduced behavioural issues, and better mental health outcomes.
At a time when youth mental health challenges are increasing, we must move beyond solely academic achievement and prioritize the emotional well-being of our children. Teaching emotional regulation, empathy, conflict resolution, resilience, and self-awareness equips students not only for school, but for life.
Countries such as Sweden have successfully integrated emotional intelligence and social-emotional learning into their education systems, resulting in positive social outcomes and improved student well-being. Canada has the opportunity to lead by doing the same.
We respectfully urge the Government of Canada to:
1) Integrate emotional intelligence education into the K–12 curriculum.
2) Provide teacher training and resources to effectively deliver this programming.
3) Partner with mental health professionals and educators to develop age-appropriate, evidence-based content.
Investing in emotional intelligence education is an investment in safer schools, healthier communities, and a stronger future generation.
Our children deserve more than academic knowledge — they deserve the tools to understand themselves and each other.
We call on the Government of Canada to take action now.
Sincerely,
Mel
Petition Update: We Have Backing!
I’m incredibly excited to share that a Canadian non-profit organization delivering structured 12-week emotional intelligence programs in schools is willing to stand behind this movement.
Their program is fully developed, already implemented in schools, and has shown meaningful, measurable impact within school communities. They have real findings, real student outcomes, and hands-on experience bringing emotional intelligence into classrooms successfully.
Even more powerful? They are willing to present their research, results, and professional insight directly to the government — if we can secure the opportunity.
This is what momentum looks like.
This is what collaboration looks like.
This is real change in motion.
Now we keep going. Keep signing. Keep sharing. The more voices behind this, the harder it is to ignore.
Our children deserve emotional intelligence as part of their education.
Let’s make them listen. 💛
🎉 Big Update: Momentum Is Building even more !
We have exciting news to share!
Bell Let's Talk has reached out, and I am now actively exploring potential funding options to help bring emotional intelligence programming into our schools.
This is a huge step forward.
It means this movement is being seen. It means conversations are happening. It means the vision of equipping students with emotional intelligence, compassion, and real-life resilience skills is gaining traction.
We are not just asking for change — we are building the pathway to make it possible.
I am continuing to review funding possibilities and next steps to ensure this can be implemented in a sustainable and impactful way.
Thank you for believing in this. Thank you for signing. Thank you for sharing.
This is how change begins — together. 💛
