Protect the Elephants: ask for sustainable and safe Tea plantations for Elephants

The Issue

Help Friend of the Earth and other local NGOs like Elephants Friendly Tea to ask the Assam government and the tea producers to grow sustainable Tea plantations for the Elephants and humans.

The problem:

Asian elephants, in particular, babies, are falling into artificial trenches on tea plantations, get injured and sometimes die as they are difficult to rehabilitate.

The conservation story of elephants is an ever-developing tale. In the nineteenth centuries elephants were 10 million, but their situation drastically precipitated when the ivory rush started, which brought the population to only more than 400 thousand individuals in the whole world.

Asian elephants are listed by the IUCN as Endangered with populations continuing to decrease, largely due to habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict

An FAO study conducted in 2018 in the Assam region of India, baby elephants and tea farmers are often at odds due to the presence of agricultural trenches. In fact, the young fall into these channels with the risk of breaking a bone, of separating from the herd or of being captured for tourist purposes.

Why?

Elephants use tea plantations as landmarks when navigating forests, they don't feed on the plants, so there is no need for fences But because there may be fewer people in tea-growing areas, pregnant females often use them as safe havens where they give birth. Their newborns may then be in danger from the trenches as a baby elephant when it falls is a bit like a turtle and can't come back on his back. He is then trapped in the trench and it's common for the mother to get trapped as well.

Elephant Friendly’s standards require that drainage trenches are safer adjusted and that they address other dangers too, such as pesticide and herbicide poisoning, electric fencing, razor wire, and human-elephant encounters. They also raise awareness and manage possible conflict with communities.

Help Friend of the Earth to spread awareness about this issue and ask for sustainable Tea Plantations. The signature will be sent to the Tea producers and Government of the Assam area and we will keep you update here.
