Mandatory Land Acknowledgment In Virtual Classes

The Issue

The land acknowledgement is a crucial element of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) education and reparations. In regular, in-person Toronto District School Board (TDSB) classes, the land acknowledgment is recited every morning, promoting an environment of understanding and respect for the land we are on. Due to Covid-19, TDSB classes have moved to virtual classrooms. We are, as a district, in a lockdown. Now more than ever, we must be grateful for the land we have. The places which keep us safe. Our homes. Now more than ever, we must stand up to recognize the origins of this land, and who has suffered so we might benefit. The implementation of a mandatory land acknowledgment could remind us all of this. Its implementation would be simple and practical, yet would still make a significant impact in terms of district-wide FNMI education and could create a generation more aware of this important ideal.
