Reclassify Dog Theft as a More Serious Offence.

The Issue

The current legislation does not take into consideration the extreme emotional trauma inflicted in cases of dog theft. The offence is often assessed using the financial loss of the victim as a guideline for punishment. This completely undermines the real value of dogs as pets.

The people of Ireland urge the government to amend the current legislation (Theft & Fraud Offence Act 2001) to include a separate and dedicated section for dog theft, that include fines and custodial sentences that reflect the emotional distress caused by the crime. For the purpose of this petition, we will refrain from arguing the rights of the dog when theft occurs, however it is worth noting the distress that is caused to the animal, distress that cannot be inflicted on inanimate objects.

The bond between man and dog is unique and loving with proven health benefits. While service dogs and medical assistance dogs offer unparalleled but obvious support to their guardians, there is evidence that all dogs also have a positive impact on the lives of their guardians by improving psychological well-being, encouraging exercise, reducing anxiety, and increasing positive moods. Dogs also reduce loneliness significantly in elderly populations, especially women, which minimizes risk of premature mortality.

Dogs are considered friends and extended family by the majority of people who have them, with a much more valued worth than any material possession. When dogs are stolen from a guardian, grief is felt. Please take the time to amend current legislation to reflect this.
