The Issue

I'm reaching out to share a pressing issue facing many families in our community, particularly those with children attending All Saints, Father Serra, St. Gregory and St. Eugene schools. Recently, a proposal has been made to change the start times for these schools under the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB). While this change may seem minor to some, it carries significant repercussions for many families who have meticulously arranged their lives around the current schedule.

One of the primary challenges is childcare. Many parents rely on before- and after-school care services that are synced with the current start and end times. Any alteration to this schedule could force families to search for alternative childcare solutions, which are often not only difficult to find but also more expensive. The financial burden could be especially heavy for single-parent households or families with tight budgets.

Moreover, work schedules are a significant concern. Parents carefully align their work hours with school schedules to ensure they can drop off and pick up their children without conflict. Altering the school start times might result in a ripple effect, causing further complications in parents’ work-life balance and increasing stress levels.

For families with multiple children attending different schools, synchronized schedules are essential. A change in one child’s schedule could lead to logistical challenges, impacting the entire family’s routine. Overlapping or irregularly spaced drop-off and pick-up times make transportation and organization more complicated.

Extracurricular activities also stand to be adversely affected. Sports practices, club meetings, and lessons are scheduled around the current school timetable. A change in dismissal times may cause participation conflicts, reducing students' ability to engage in these important developmental activities.

It’s crucial for the TCDSB to understand the broad impact of such a decision. We, as a community, urge the board to reconsider any changes to the school start times. Let’s work together to keep the start times as they are, protecting the stability and harmony of our families' day-to-day lives.

Please sign this petition to preserve our current school start times and support the well-being of our children and their families.
