Taxation on Churches, Religious Buildings to Directly Fund Essential Community Services

Taxation on Churches, Religious Buildings to Directly Fund Essential Community Services
The issue
As a deeply concerned citizen, I am pained by the ongoing cost of living crisis I witness daily. It's disheartening to see fancy cars driven by people attached to tax-exempt organizations while struggling mothers fight to hold down basic necessities. This observation, shared by many, emphasizes the alarming disparity in wealth distribution in our society.
In response to this, we are calling for the government to consider the taxation of all churches and religious buildings. The revenue from these taxes would be directed towards numerous critical services including but not limited to, aboriginal agencies, mental health services, women's health services, veteran support, and youth homelessness services, particularly for the LGBTIQA+ community.
Historically, churches were exempt from taxes due to the community work and services they offered. However, this imbalance must be addressed in the face of pressing societal needs. By instituting this tax, we can help to alleviate financial pressures across numerous sectors and contribute meaningfully to our community's well-being.
Furthermore, the additional funding could be utilized as a tool against the student debt crisis. In Australia, student debt held by the government rises by about 25% each year, reaching AUD$60 billion in 2019, according to data from the Grattan Institute.
Lastly, important services such as domestic violence refuge services, women's reproductive medical services, community-based veteran support, and gambling support services would significantly benefit from this tax.
In order to ensure a fair and equitable society, where funds are directed towards necessary, life-changing services, we need your support. Together, we can set a precedent for redistributing wealth in the interest of all our citizens. Please endorse this essential change by signing the petition.
