Parking in the Tauranga CBD is time-consuming, challenging, competitive, and expensive. Tertiary students don't get discount parking rates despite financial hardships and challenges. High parking prices put students between a rock and a hard place trying to prioritize time or money, and time is valuable for students trying to juggle classes, homework, family, and routine daily life activities. Other city councils provide discount parking for tertiary students.

I spoke to one student who claimed that they had parked illegally for a whole year and accumulated 8 tickets which worked out cheaper than what they would have paid for the parking fees! A parking ticket costs $40. Parking for a whole day in a parking building costs $12! That means that 4 full-time days of parking fees equals more than a parking ticket.
