Eric is a resilient 51-year-old African American man who hails from Dayton, Ohio. His life's journey has been marked by challenges that have tested his strength and determination. Epilepsy, a condition that induces seizures, has left its mark on him, leaving scars on his head, arms, and legs from the countless times he inadvertently collided with the unforgiving metal within the confines of the Mississippi Prison system. Despite his ongoing battle with the disorder, Eric remains undeterred.

His early years were fraught with adversity. Born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD), he was separated from his birth mother and placed into the care of the Browns, a military family who later adopted him when he was just nine years old. Even then, signs of his unique struggles emerged. Dyslexia, a learning disability that challenges reading and comprehension, was identified by a perceptive foster father. This diagnosis brought about a pivotal turning point, leading to Eric's connection with the Social Security Administration, which recognized his disabilities and provided him with a means of support.

In the face of these challenges, Eric found solace and empowerment through his talent for running track. His speed and remarkable jumping ability caught the discerning eye of Buff Taylor, the esteemed head track coach at Jefferson Township. Under Buff's guidance, Eric's potential flourished. By 1987, he had earned a spot as a freshman at Jefferson High School, where his exceptional abilities propelled him to a daring feat – joining the Senior track team, a rarity for a newcomer. In 1988, Eric's undeniable determination and skill played a pivotal role in the team's triumphant victory in the 4x100 relay, an accomplishment that cemented his status as a true champion.

In the year 1990, Eric's relationship with his foster father reached a troubling breaking point, characterized by a distressing pattern of physical abuse. Despite one intervention by Buff, a concerned figure, the abuse persisted, casting a dark shadow over Eric's life. As July 14th of that year marked Eric's 18th birthday, he found the courage to escape the cycle of torment. Leaving behind the home marred by pain, he sought refuge with his sole high school friend, Johnathan. The generosity of Johnathan's father provided them with a lifeline, granting them the opportunity to choose a school for their final year of education.

Although facing significant challenges with reading and writing, Eric held onto an unshakable belief in his athletic prowess. He reasoned that his exceptional track and field abilities would transcend any academic limitations. This conviction led him to select Colonel White, a Dayton Public high school, where his track record would speak volumes.

In 1991, Eric made a poignant sacrifice by forgoing the allure of prom to chase a greater goal – securing the 1991 title for the longest high school long jump at Welcome Stadium. His first jump, an impressive 25 feet, 11 and one fourth-quarter inches, propelled him to the pinnacle of the State track meet rankings just two weeks later. Moreover, Eric's unwavering determination and exceptional performance led Colonel White high school to its inaugural appearance in the State track meet, competing in both the 4x100 relay and the long jump events.

Despite garnering more than ten college acceptance letters, Eric confronted the reality of his academic background, having graduated through SLD (Specific Learning Disability) classes. Recognizing the challenges that awaited him, he acknowledged that these qualifications might not suffice for success in college.

The year 1992 witnessed Eric's attention shifting towards his sister, Charlene, who had embarked on a new chapter of her life through marriage in Mississippi. Visiting her on multiple occasions, Eric displayed a steadfast commitment to his family. In 1993, news reached him that Charlene's husband had returned to Dayton, Ohio, leaving her stranded in Pontotoc, Mississippi. Fueled by compassion and a sense of duty, Eric made the bold decision to leave his job and journey to Mississippi to support his sister.

Upon arrival, Eric's devotion to his sister was unwavering. He provided care and companionship, going above and beyond to ensure Charlene's well-being. During this time, a poignant revelation emerged – Charlene confided in Eric that she was pregnant, yearning to discern her husband's commitment to their relationship. A pivotal moment occurred during the Christmas of 1993, as Charlene embarked on a journey to salvage her fractured marriage, returning to Dayton, Ohio. Meanwhile, Eric remained steadfast by his sister-in-law's side in Pontotoc, a testament to his enduring dedication to family.

In the tumultuous year of 1998, Eric's life became entangled in a complex and emotionally charged love triangle. Two women, both deeply connected to him, found themselves in constant conflict, a reflection of his inability to make a definitive choice between them. Coincidentally, both women found themselves expecting children around the same time, intensifying the already tense situation.

Eric's failure to decisively choose one of the women perpetuated the strife, leading to a desperate attempt to find a resolution. He made the heartfelt decision to marry one of the women and embark on a new life out of state, hoping to provide a stable environment for his growing family. Compelled by her plea, he chose to marry her before their planned relocation, naively believing that their union would remain a secret until they had settled elsewhere.

On a winter day, January 12, 1999, Eric journeyed to Memphis, Tennessee, where he exchanged vows in a quiet ceremony. However, the course of events that followed would alter his life forever. A fateful encounter on January 22nd set in motion a tragic chain of events. The other woman, whose connection to Eric remained, issued instructions that he couldn't resist, leading him to meet with her before his planned visit to see the child they shared. What transpired during this meeting was a sequence of ill- fated decisions that would have far-reaching consequences.

Unbeknownst to Eric, a series of revelations had unfolded, revealing that he had married the other woman. The emotional storm that ensued culminated in a violent altercation, one that saw Eric attempting to prevent her from accessing a potentially lethal weapon. The gravity of the situation escalated, resulting in the tragic loss of both the woman and her unborn child. As the events unfolded, Eric found himself in a harrowing moment of struggle and conflict.

Two prevailing theories circulate, each offering a unique perspective on tragic events. One narrative suggests that Eric, in a desperate bid to restrain the woman, succumbed to a seizure, rendering him unable to control his physical reactions. In this version of events, he grappled with forces beyond his control, unable to recall the subsequent moments. However, as consciousness returned, he found himself confronted with the sight of his newlywed wife.

A second theory proposes a different sequence of events, speculating that Eric's legally wedded wife discovered the rendezvous in Tupelo and confronted the other woman. A tumultuous altercation ensued, ultimately leading to the devastating outcome. Amidst the chaos, Eric, vulnerable due to his epileptic condition, experienced a seizure that erased his memory of the events that unfolded, yet he shouldered the blame for the tragic loss.

This haunting episode in Eric's life underscores the profound impact of choices made and the unforeseen consequences that can arise from seemingly innocuous decisions. The interplay of human emotions, circumstances, and medical conditions intertwined shaped a heartbreaking turning point that would forever alter the course of Eric's life.

In the wake of that fateful evening, Eric's heartache permeated every moment of his life. The weight of his remorse bore down on him for over a year, a constant shadow that left him weeping in the depths of despair. The magnitude of his mourning was so profound that it drove him to the brink, culminating in a desperate attempt to end his own life while confined within the County jail. It was a moment of anguish that might have gone unnoticed, were it not for the discerning eye of the Sheriff, who uncovered Eric's turmoil during a routine doctor's visit, precipitated by his depleted medication.

To unravel the complexities of Eric's mental state, both his defense attorney and the County prosecutor requested comprehensive psychological evaluations, as mandated by the legal framework. Regrettably, while these examinations were undertaken, the judicial system fell short of its responsibility, neglecting to grant Eric the competency hearing that was imperative under the prevailing law at that time.

Faced with the daunting legal proceedings, Eric's path took a turn that would forever shape his existence. Advised by his court-appointed counsel, he made the agonizing decision to plead guilty to both charges. In a cruel twist of fate, this counsel's advice would lead to a sentence that would irrevocably alter the course of Eric's life. The gavel fell, and Eric was handed a twenty-year sentence for manslaughter, coupled with the harshest of punishments – a life sentence for murder. The sentences, in a rare alignment, were to be served concurrently, meaning that Eric found himself condemned to a life of incarceration, with only one sentence to his name – a "Life" sentence.

Eric's narrative stands as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that the legal system can wield on the lives of individuals caught in its grasp. His story beckons us to contemplate the consequences of decisions made, both by individuals and the broader mechanisms of justice, and to empathize with the anguish that can ensue from a momentous misstep.

During his time behind prison walls, Eric has displayed unwavering determination to better himself, channeling his energy into personal growth and transformation. His pursuit of self-improvement has been marked by a commitment to learning, embracing every opportunity to expand his knowledge and evolve as an individual.

In his pursuit of growth, Eric has embraced a range of classes offered within the confines of the correctional system. Courses spanning anger management, stress management, and spiritual development – including the profound "Experiencing God" program – have enriched his understanding of life's complexities and the potential for change. Following his completion of the Experiencing God course, the head chaplain in Green County recognized Eric's hunger for knowledge and encouraged him to further his education.

Eric's spiritual journey has been a profound source of solace and inspiration. Despite the initial challenge of being unable to read, his profound yearning to connect with God led him to a heartfelt prayer. This plea for forgiveness and understanding ignited a transformation that enabled him to not only read but comprehend the scriptures within the Bible, fostering a deep and profound spiritual connection.

In a pivotal moment of revelation in 2004, Eric dedicated his life to God. Since then, his unwavering faith has facilitated an extraordinary feat – the acquisition of reading skills that enabled him to enroll in the transformative F.B.I. (Faith Based Initiative) program offered by Leavell College, an extension of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary College. Eric's remarkable journey within this program is paving the way for the realization of a dream: the attainment of his bachelor’s degree in the near future.

Fueled by his spiritual and personal growth, Eric aspires to give back to his fellow inmates through meaningful ministry work within the prison system. His desire to share his blessings and knowledge manifests in his wish to establish a rehabilitation course titled "Getting Ahead While Getting Out," a program that he experienced firsthand and believes can be life-changing for others.

His ongoing dedication to self-improvement underscores Eric's commitment to his transformation. With years of rehabilitation and educational programs, Eric stands as a testament to the potential for change and redemption. Now, he aspires to embark on a new chapter – one that extends beyond prison walls.
