At their Full Council Meeting today, Tasman District Council (TDC) passed a resolution in support of the Golden Bay Grand Stand Community Trust Inc spending three months refining their proposal to save the grandstand! During this time the old squash court building will be demolished to enable the Trust to evaluate what needs to be done, if anything, to the Grandstand to enable its retention. The photograph above was created by a local artist to show just what the Grandstand could look like with the squash court building gone - we think it looks pretty good next to the new facility, with its complementary paintwork, old and new, side by side. Interestingly, at the meeting TDC indicated a preference for a look that emphasised more the high heritage value of the Grandstand than one that blended with the new! All things to think about and consider for the future. Although the fight to save the Grandstand is by no means over this is a huge and positive step towards a resolution that will accommodate the wider needs and wishes of the Golden Bay Community. We thank the Councillors for this show of recognition of those needs and wishes and look forward to more positive outcomes in the next three months. At the end of the three months the Trust has to produce for TDC a viable proposal that includes three scenarios: 1 keep the Grandstand in situ and renovate, 2 relocation, and 3 demolition. We are taking the afternoon off, but will get onto it again tomorrow!
