Allow Mark Holtorf to Guest Direct

The Issue

On the morning of October 7, Mr. Holtorf was called into a meeting with his dean and department head while preparing for one of his lecture classes. Upon his arrival, he was given his notice of intent regarding an alleged Title IX report against his character and informed him that he would be removed from campus effective immediately. The department head had already posted a note informing the students of the class cancellation. According to this notice, the students were informed before Mr. Holtorf. This does not reflect the loyalty nor integrity of an esteemed university that prides itself on such virtues. Following this news, that he had been asked to leave, he voiced that he quit. A statement that was made in a justified moment of confusion and anger. I have asked Mr. Holtorf if he submitted a resignation letter in writing and was informed, he had not. However, that very day, the dean submitted the beginning paperwork for his resignation, even though he had planned to retire Spring 2022. While I am aware that Tarleton is well in its right to do so, it was in poor taste to move forward with that decision without reviewing with Mr. Holtorf his sincerity in the matter. Neither member of administration made a point to communicate with Mr. Holtorf during his absence to check on his well-being, both aware of his recently recovered stroke, or to give insight regarding the status of his position with the school. During this time, he was also not allowed to continue his use of the amenities of the wellness center for his physical therapy. Which goes against 12.01 section 5 in the Tarleton Faculty Handbook. A negligence of potentially life-threatening repercussion where no provisions were made by Tarleton to ensure that his physicals needs were met.
After 34 years of contributions, Mr. Holtorf was treated with no dignity nor respect shown to a valued faculty member that has given over half his life putting his students first. Mr. Holtorf has helped thousands of financially struggling students complete an education in COLFA through scholarships. These are students that would not have been given this opportunity of succeeding if not for the fact that he is an educator who genuinely cares about not only the students, but the entire COLFA community regardless of department. He served as the Technical Director for the theatres and of the Fine Arts building. He also, created Improv at Tarleton, the “Summer Studio,” an excellent way to promote the fine arts by community involvement and increasing sales during the summers. It was because of him that the show seasons changed from 3 shows to 5. He served as the faculty sponsor for Tarleton Players, one of the oldest organizations at Tarleton, often giving his own money to ensure our department has a good banquet to reward students for their challenging work through the year.
To correct this, I propose Mr. Holtorf be invited back to end his legacy at Tarleton as he always intended, by guest directing “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller, making it a show driven by Alumni to display the talent and success that has come from the Tarleton Theatre Department thanks to his mentorship and guidance. This allows Mr. Holtorf his final show, and an opportunity to take his final bow with grace and dignity. Funds to bring the play to fruition can be raised by Theatre fraternity Alpha Psi Omega and organization, Tarleton Players. This would reflect positively on the University and include the community involvement mandatory for fairness to be displayed and dereliction corrected.
