Save the Human Rights Center of Chapel Hill and Carrboro
Your urgent attention is required!!
The Human Rights Center in Chapel Hill/Carrboro is a 501(c)(3) opened in 2009 by Professor Judith Blau (http://www.humanrightscities.org/) as a community-based service center that conducts a wide variety of programs completely free of charge for residents of Abbey Court.
The activities of the Human Rights Center include an after-school program, soccer, ESL and computer literacy programs, nutrition and yoga classes, collaborative programs with Abbey Court residents, festivals, advocacy, promoting food security and nondiscriminatory housing practices. With the assistance of Technology Without Borders, the HRC has been able to set up a free wireless Internet service in Abbey Court.
Despite the fact that the HRC has peacefully existed for years, the lawyer of the homeowner’s association will start imposing excessive fines ($200/day) on the Human Rights Center to effectively force the organization out of the two apartment units it currently rents. The decision will be made on Thursday, December 1st about whether the fines will begin immediately or if the HRC will have a grace period to find a new location and finish out their programming for the year.
We need your help in signing the online petition that will give the HRC a grace period (until May 2012) to finish programming for the school year (including afterschool programs, tutoring, internet services, financial literacy trainings, ESL courses, and many other incredible services for the community) and relocate.
Please pass this along to friends and family. Your support is greatly appreciated.
