River Tame Angling

River Tame Angling
The Issue
To remove the fishing ban along the River Tame in Haughton Dale.
The river valley is used for recreation by cyclists, horse riders, dog walkers and canoeists, all allowed by Tameside Council despite their impact on the wildlife and environment. But the group who are the eyes and ears of the river, who do the work in campaigning for improvement, do regular water quality, flora and fauna surveys and record and report the results, and actually pay for their use of the waterways through their yearly rod licence, are the only group who are banned from using it, namely the anglers.
This has been the case for the past 20 years, attitudes to angling have changed in this time and the river is a built in amenity for the use of all the local community not just the chosen few. An opportunity for local junior, disabled, and able bodied anglers to access free river fishing on their doorstep.
Approaches have been made to the council, but if strength of feeling can be shown through presentation of this petition, it would have a greater impact on the council's position and hopefully facilitate change.
