The Issue

To the Government of India,
National Commission for Women (NCW),
Supreme Court of India,
Ministry of Home Affairs and all concerned authorities,

We, the citizens of India, raise our voices in collective grief, anger, and pain over the tragic and preventable deaths of daughters like Twisha Sharma from Bhopal and Deepika Nagar from Greater Noida. These young women, full of life and dreams, allegedly suffered unimaginable harassment, torture, and cruelty from those who should have cherished them. Instead, they became victims of the outdated and illegal practice of dowry harassment, ultimately leading to their untimely and horrific deaths.

The anguish of losing a daughter to such barbarity—bride deaths driven by dowry demands—is compounded by the persistent failure of our investigation systems to deliver justice. Twisha and Deepika are not isolated cases; according to the National Crime Records Bureau, thousands of dowry deaths occur in India every year. This is a grave social evil that continues to plague our society, tearing families apart and leaving indelible scars.

Dowry is a criminal offence under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, yet it remains a widespread and accepted practice in many parts of our country. Even worse, when women speak out, they are often met with threats and further violence, which silences those who need protection the most. Twisha, Deepika, and countless others have paid with their lives due to a system that fails to protect its women.

We demand immediate and urgent action:

1. Strengthened Legislation and Penalties: Ensure stricter enforcement of existing laws and enact tougher legislation to deter dowry practices, ensuring quick and severe penalties for violators.

2. Immediate Investigation Reform: Overhaul investigation protocols related to dowry harassment and bride deaths to ensure comprehensive, efficient, and unbiased inquiries that hold guilty parties accountable.

3. Increased Awareness and Education: Initiate nationwide campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers and illegality of dowry, promoting societal change against this regressive tradition.

4.Support Systems for Victims Establish safe havens and support systems for women at risk of dowry harassment, offering legal aid, counselling, and protection against coercive threats.

Let Twisha Sharma and Deepika Nagar's stories be the catalyst for change. Their tragic destinies should not be repeated; let us come together to protect our daughters, sisters, and future generations.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for justice and a commitment from our authorities to eradicate dowry harassment and bride deaths once and for all. Sign now for a safer, more just India for all women.
