Take Flight Garage Flight Training Initiative

The Issue

The Pilot Shortage is crippling the aviation industry and it is largely caused by the massive paywalls that shut out students from pursuing their training. Flight Training in the US is not considered post secondary education, which means students do not have access to the same type of loans that any other career or technical trade might have to offer in order to pay for the education and skillsets required in those fields.

The T.F.G. Flight Training Initiative seeks to set up new bipartisan legislation and work with both House and Senate committees as well as the Department of Education and the Federal Aviation Administration, to allow flight students access to the same student private and federal loans that are already available.

While some universities do have flight programs, they are contracted with a small number of academies and disqualify the use of any financial aide to be used towards the actual costs for flying. Fees such as airplane rental, instructor charges, books, FAA medical exams, Designated Pilot Examiner fees, are entirely the students responsibility. In many cases they are expected to pay on their own while not working due to the intensity of flight training. The only systems in place currently to aide students in paying for flight training are loans provided by lending companies partnered with flight schools and these academies. They can exceed $150,000 and usually carry double digit interest rates.

T.F.G. operates under the notion that any student has the right to fair and equal opportunity to be educated without being locked out by financial barriers. The legislation in development does not seek taxpayer funds, it does not promise free education, it is simply seeking to give every potential pilot a fair shot.
