The Issue
My name is Joseph Peterman, and I live in Owasso, Oklahoma. My younger brother was just 20 years old when he took his own life. He was going through a lot—unsure of his identity, struggling with depression, trying to find his place in the world. But through it all, he remained a beautiful, kind, loving soul who cared deeply for those around him. Our family did everything we could to help. He tried therapy, different medications, and even stayed at a mental health facility. But nothing seemed to work for him. We thought he was getting better. What we didn’t know at the time was that he had been visiting a website called Sanctioned Suicide for months. This site claims to be “pro-choice” and “pro-connection,” but that’s a lie. If you visit it—even briefly—you’ll see forum threads explicitly discussing suicide methods, timelines, and even instructions on how to obtain certain drugs to assist with ending your life. Users share detailed plans, encourage one another, and downplay the idea of getting professional help. It’s not a support system. It’s a death trap. This website helped my brother make a final decision that he might not have made if this information wasn’t so readily available and supported. He didn’t deserve to be given a roadmap to end his life. He deserved real help. We need to take action. Here’s what I’m asking for: Congressional action to classify and ban websites that promote or share methods of suicide under existing laws about inciting harm and aiding in self-harm. Web hosting and search platforms (like Google, GoDaddy, and Cloudflare) to de-index and take down this site immediately. State and federal investigators to pursue legal consequences for those operating these sites, especially when minors and vulnerable individuals are being harmed. More regulation on online content related to self-harm, including transparency in how these forums operate and accountability for the harm they cause. There are laws in place that could apply to this, including: 18 U.S. Code § 373 – Solicitation to commit a crime of violence; Section 230 reform to prevent dangerous websites from hiding behind internet immunity; and state-level laws on assisting suicide and aiding/abetting harmful behavior online. I don’t want another family to go through what we’ve been through. I don’t want another sibling to carry this pain. And I certainly don’t want another young person in crisis to be guided toward death by a stranger behind a keyboard. Please help us shut this down. Sign this petition. Share it. And let’s work together to protect the people who need it most.
