Take action for Honour 25 Pakistani crew
The Issue
For over 109 days now, the crew of Honour 25, all of whom are Pakistani nationals, have been held hostage by Somali pirates. These brave individuals, who were simply carrying out their duties at sea, have been unjustly captured and are now suffering in dire circumstances. As a fellow Pakistani, my heart aches for their plight. Not only is their freedom at stake, but their health is deteriorating rapidly. They have been surviving on a mere diet of rice, inadequate to sustain them physically or give them the strength they need to endure this ordeal.
The responsibility lies not only in condemning this act of piracy but also in taking swift and effective action to rescue these men. This is a plea addressed to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and other relevant authorities to prioritize the release and safe return of the Honour 25 crew. Pakistan has the resources and diplomatic channels necessary to intervene, and it’s crucial for our government to demonstrate its accountability in protecting its citizens, no matter where they are in the world.
Piracy off the coast of Somalia has been a longstanding threat, affecting global shipping lanes and putting countless lives in peril. The United Nations' International Maritime Organization has reported numerous such hijacking incidents, but with international cooperation, many have been successfully resolved. Countries like the United States and China have shown that with the right strategy and negotiations, such situations can be brought to a peaceful resolution.
It’s vital for Pakistan to collaborate with international partners and maritime organizations to ensure the safety of these crew members as well as to find long-term solutions to protect others from becoming victims of piracy. The affected families are waiting with bated breath for any news about their loved ones. Can we just imagine the relief that a swift and successful resolution would bring them?
