The Peaceful Way to Connect: Addressing Cyberbullying

The Issue

Cyberbullying is an evolved form of traditional bullying which emerged with the advent of affordable personal computers during the late 20th century. The creation of the internet gave bullies one of their most fearsome attributes - anonymity or being anonymous. In the current age where devices that could use the internet are continuously being developed and evolved, the availability of such devices also increases. With all that in line, internet users are now facing three (3) identified problems: the anonymity of cyberbullies, the increased frequency of cyberbullying, and the lack of protection against cyberbullies.

There are many news stories that have reported cyberbullying cases all around the world. For example, last 2010 in Seattle, twenty-eight (28) students at McClure Middle High School were suspended for allegedly bullying a classmate online (Shaw). On another story, a high school student in Massachusetts hanged herself after she was repeatedly tormented by cyberbullying at Facebook (Susan, 2010). Lastly, in Australia, a nine-year-old fourth-grade-girl received pornographic emails from a classmate (Paulson, 2003). The previous examples include a wide range of incidents such as virtual flaming, sexually suggestive comments, and distribution of explicit photographs. It also clearly shows the danger and harm that cyberbullying poses among adolescents. In a thesis by Witkus (2012), she noted that once cyberbullying is electronically shared, it is almost impossible to nullify all of its effects. Other incidents like hurtful messages, emotional struggles, anxiety over peer pressure, shadow banning and many more, are also growing challenges for the youth.

In the Philippines, latest national data shows that almost half of children aged 13-17 experience cyberbullying (United Nations Children's Fund [UNICEF], 2019) with prevalence rates being almost the same for both males (44%) and females (43%). Among these cyberviolence, one-third is on the form of verbal abuse and a fourth are through sexual messages. Cyberbullying, in its sense and in all forms, has devastating effects to the physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing of internet users.
