Save Tahoe's Only Public Hot Spring- Brockway Springs

Save Tahoe's Only Public Hot Spring- Brockway Springs
Why this petition matters
Brockway Springs is a very unique hot spring that is located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, California. The hot spring is located well below the high water line of Lake Tahoe and therefore located within the public trust in the State of California. Although the hot spring is located within the public trust, it is sealed off from Lake Tahoe by a containment structure and diverted into a private development known as Brockway Springs Resort's private pool.
Although the large majority of the hot spring water is pumped into a private pool, a small amount of hot spring water leaks out of the current containment structure and into Lake Tahoe. When the lake level is low enough these leaks allow the public to arrange rocks into natural hot spring pools on the edge of Lake Tahoe creating a truly amazing experience for those who make the journey.
Brockway Springs Resort has submitted plans to the relevant agencies and building departments to tear down and replace the current containment structure with a new containment structure that will not leak. If this happens, public access to this hot spring will be lost completely for generations to come no matter what the lake level. This cannot be allowed to happen.
Ideally this petition would like to see the hot spring containment structure dismantled completely and the hot springs restored to a natural state. Since that is unlikely to happen, the purpose of this petition is to prevent the proposed new containment structure from being built and simply leaving things the way they are now. If that is not an option and the proposed new containment structure is to be built, 50% of the hot spring water should be released from the new containment structure into the lake where it surfaces thereby allowing the public access to the hot spring water in accordance with the public trust.
