Ask Syracuse University to allow trademark of Cuse Juice for Lock 1 Distilling Company

Ask Syracuse University to allow trademark of Cuse Juice for Lock 1 Distilling Company
The Issue
Since the fall of 2018 Lock 1 Distilling Co. has been in discussions with Syracuse University about their “concerns” regarding the popular Cuse Juice Orange Liqueur. Syracuse University threatened Lock 1 with endless and expensive litigation over trademark and common law rights. Anyone who knows understands that such litigation can take years and cost upwards of $250,000 or more. Additionally, the liqueur, the bottle, the merchandising and distribution has never in any way signified a relationship with the University. Cuse Juice is simply an homage to a great city and does not infringe upon the actual trademark of "Cuse" which is for "clothing, namely, shirts and caps."
Regardless, the University has chosen to beat down a local family business that has no choice but to agree to cease production and sales of one of its best sellers. The owners have rightfully decided to put their employees, families, and suppliers first and not risk bankrupting litigation to fight what is more than likely a winnable case.
Sadly, a great local product enjoyed by thousands of people from across the country is being forced out of circulation because of the resources of a private university over-zealously protecting a trademark which is not in conflict with the liqueur. While the University couldn't care any less about anything other than its power and bottom line, show your support for the Distillery and sign the petition!
