Switch to Year-Round Policy Debate and Forensics in Kansas

Switch to Year-Round Policy Debate and Forensics in Kansas

The Issue

Every year, talented young debaters in Kansas find themselves limited in their potential for success in forensics, Lincoln-Douglas, and public forum debate. Why? It's not due to a lack of talent or dedication. The reality is that Kansas debaters only get to practice and compete in either policy debate or forensics each semester, and not year-round. Consequently, this inadequate system hinders the students' development and ability to compete on national levels.

According to the National Speech & Debate Association, extended debate prep and competition schedule are crucial to nurture critical thinking, problem-solving, and public speaking capabilities among students. However, in Kansas, a systematic limitation restricts our young debaters from realizing their full potential - a scenario that needs immediate redressing.

Kansas debaters have long been contending that this policy is a setback, placing them at a handicap compared to their peers from other states where debate schedules are not similarly constrained. Their plea for a comprehensive, year-round debate and forensics schedule reflects not just an adolescent whim. It represents a constructive argument backed by evidence that extended engagement in debate and forensics yields notable intellectual growth, improved academic performance, and better college and career opportunities.

The students of Kansas - the ones truly affected by this restrictive policy - are raising their voices. Now it's time for us to add our own to the chorus. By implementing a year-round policy debate and forensics program in Kansas schools, we can provide the coming generations of debaters an equal platform to grow, learn, and excel.

Please sign this petition and stand in solidarity with Kansas debaters for year-round policy debate and forensics. Let their voices be heard and their potential be unleashed.
