Why this petition matters

Starting January 1st 2020, Fulton County agreed to begin phasing-out all single-use plastic in all Fulton County owned buildings, marking an important step in a greener future.

There are around 380 million tons of plastic produced each year, 50% of it coming from single-use plastic. School cafeteria's are filled with single-use plastics and other appliances that are hurtful to the environment. This includes utensils, the plastic bags they come in, and foam trays. Not only are these single-use plastics harmful to the environment and the animals of our marine bodies and beaches (not to mention the ever-growing plastic island in the middle of our ocean) but they also pose a health risk to students. The chemical polystyrene (found in plastic utensils and foam, and released when used to eat hot food) has been linked with various health issues, such as fatigue, headaches, and depression. By choosing biodegradable appliances, schools are not only helping the environment and setting a good example to the students on how one should treat the world around them, but also protecting their health.

Let Fulton County continue to set an example of how to better the climate crisis in Georgia. By signing this petition, you are promoting a greener, and brighter future for the state of our country.
