The Issue

Every morning, students struggle to wake up for the early school start time in Manchester Essex, MA. The combination of late night homework and after-school sports leaves students exhausted. We find it increasingly difficult to concentrate during those early morning classes. Changing school start times can significantly improve students' well-being and academic performance.

Scientific studies, including those by the American Academy of Pediatrics, have shown that later start times are beneficial for adolescents. Teenagers have a biological need to sleep later and wake up later due to their natural sleep cycles. According to a 2014 report, starting secondary school before 8:30 AM is not recommended since it can impair physical and mental health, as well as academic success.

In the Manchester Essex School District, middle and high school students start their day far too early, while elementary school students begin later when they are more naturally inclined to wake up earlier. By switching start times, where elementary schools begin earlier, we can align school schedules with students' natural sleep patterns.

In practical terms, this change would mean that middle and high school students start their day at 8:30 AM, as opposed to the current 7:45 AM. This shift would allow students to get the necessary sleep health experts advise, which could lead to improved alertness and better academic outcomes. Similar adjustments in other districts, such as in Seattle, have already shown positive results, including increased attendance and overall student well-being.

This proposal doesn't just focus on convenience; it echoes a broader mission of prioritizing physical health and academic excellence for the youth in our community. The necessary logistical changes, while challenging, are worth addressing for the betterment of our students.

I am calling on the Manchester Essex School District to take action and revise our school start times. Please join us in supporting this change by signing this petition and advocating for a healthier school schedule for all students.
