PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEAD AND UNDER CONTROL

The Issue

BARTONS POINT on the Isle of Sheppey is known for its beautiful wildlife, including a resident pair of swans who have every year raised cygnets for us all to see and enjoy watch grow. There are spacious walks to be had, seating areas around the lake, where you can enjoy the views. It is a known area to dog walkers, dogs freely run off leads around the area.

LAST YEAR, our resident Male was attacked by a dog off his lead, and whilst trying to protect his family suffered injuries, this resulted into a 15 hour rescue with local residents and SWAMPYS WILDLIFE RESCUE After 6 days recovering from his ordeal at the SWAN SANCTUARY the Male was returned to his family. This year, 5 Cyngets and the parents were charged at by a dog off its lead around the water edge which resulted in the death of one of our cygnets (it was 3 days old)

We’ve since had temporary signs put up to ask people to keep dogs on leads and under control as swans are nesting. THESE SIGNS NEED TO BE MADE A STRUCTURE AND MORE PERMANENT, NOT JUST WHEN SWANS/DUCKS ARE NESTING.

There are enough grounds to walk your dog away from the lake if you wish to have it off the lead. But dogs must be controlled around the water edge. RESPECT THE WILDLIFE THIS IS THEIR HOME!
