One of the latest Sussex Tab articles has revealed not only a lack of accountability but also a clear lack of decency by the Editor-in-Chief. For those who have not read the article, here is the link:

Firstly, I would like to pass on my deepest sympathies to the family during this difficult time. Respecting the family’s wishes should be paramount to ensure they have the time to grieve but celebrate their son’s life.

It is with this respect for the family that I ask Georgia Mooney to remove the article immediately, make a formal apology to the family and step down as Editor-in-Chief of The Tab Sussex. As the spokesperson for Sussex University has stated, “This is an extremely difficult time for X’s family and his friends, and we ask that their privacy is respected.” Publishing an article directly ignoring the requests of the University and the family moreover is both disrespectful and unbelievable. There is no need for an article to announce the tragic event and no need to justify the article by framing it as a reminder for well-being and counselling support at Sussex.

I am appalled to also hear that this is not the first time a student’s tragic passing has been subject to an article for The Tab Sussex and also by the same author & Editor-in-Chief. According to comments on the Facebook post sharing the article, this is the 2nd or 3rd occurrence of this type of disgusting article published by Georgia Mooney. I have also learned that 2 Editors and a number of writers have left The Tab Sussex following the article’s publication. I encourage other members of The Tab Sussex to also walk out in a show of solidarity and a call for Georgia Mooney to step down as Editor-in-Chief.

I hope this petition is successful in restoring the accountability of The Tab Sussex which many students rely on for regular and relevant student news updates.
