Environmental Minister of New South Wales, Sussan Ley has just approved coal mining and desecration of Indigenous sacred lands upon Gomeroi Country. The Traditional Custodian’s of Gomeroi Land have expressed their absolute heartache and anger, these cries have been muted, they are fighting a silent war. Gomeroi woman, Dolly Talbot stated this: “Our direct ancestors are buried out there. You don’t go and blow up European sites so why should they be able to do that to us?”

Not only is this culturally devastating, but an environmental offence too. Sources read that “air pollution from coal-fired power plants is linked with asthma, cancer, heart and lung ailments, neurological problems, acid rain, global warming, and other severe environmental and public health impacts”.

This is not an isolated event; just last month, Western Australia allowed Rio Tinto to obliterate a sacred 46,000 year old cave for more mining profit, along with the flexibility to destroy potentially up to 86 others. Indigenous Australians are the oldest living civilisation on Earth, backdating over 60,000 years of inhabitance within Australia. This connection to Country cannot be explained, only felt, and felt strongly by Indigenous peoples.

These ancient sites deserve protection and its People deserve respect. Imagine if somebody planted a bomb in the graveyard your parents were buried… feel that emotion, feel that anger. Please sign this petition to amplify Blak voices whose pleas are smothered beneath the knee of white ignorance. Black Lives Matter. Black voices matter. Black issues matter.

How deep into Country’s soil can you mine before you reach the bones this country is built on?
